About ZOO Science
The origins of ZOO Science
Scientific research is part of the DNA of ZOO Antwerpen and ZOO Planckendael. Science practiced and applied in our zoos, in our field research stations, in our own laboratories, at universities and, above all, in our research centre the Antwerp Zoo Centre for Research and Conservation (CRC). Since the official start in 2002 the CRC has grown into one of the most advanced zoo-based research centres worldwide. But how did it all start? How did ZOO Antwerpen become one of the first 'scientific zoos' in the world, with its own research institute?
Scientific research is in our DNA - ZOO Antwerpen & ZOO Planckendael
Research disciplines
Our scientists and zoo experts are leaders in their fields, which include conservation genetics, animal behaviour and welfare, evolutionary biology and veterinary medicine. With this expertise we collaborate in scientific projects focussing on three key themes: applied animal welfare, applied nature conservation and basic zoology.
Who is behind ZOO Science?
We perform and use science in our parks day in day out. Previously this was done rather anonymously and behind the scenes. Who are we? What do we do? And why are we so interested in research? Why do we believe the daily work in our zoos, and in naturea shopuld be based on scientific? Let us explain.
